Looks like 37 8 or 9 big flathead

Appears to have a wide brace rear fender, but how can that be if the pic was taken in 43? Must be my eyes.

1939 Big Twin Flathead...in the U family...and yeah that rear fender brace does look wide but maybe it's glare or something...

It is not 37 - oil lines and handlebars tell us that. I am betting on it being a 1939 UL. I wished I had a better computer because the taillight and the valve spring covers would tell us 1938 or 39. The taillight does not appear to be either the 39 or 39 variety so maybe the photo is 1946ish and the rear fender has been replaced.

The photo is 1943 as the fellow died in an accident just before entering the Army as a motorcycle rider. Alterations are possible as he did have income from his railroad job.
