  • Archival photos from Vermont

Ran into these photos today (okay... I was not working when I should have been....) and they are photos archived by the University of Vermont. With the exception of the 1947 Indian Chief they are all in the collection of the Henry Sheldon Museum.

John Dalton of Bristol, Vermont with the Indian he purchased after returning from WWI, photo taken in 1919

Another early Vermont motor cycle, what is it?

Looks like some law enforcement at one of those re-enactments of the French-Indian War

Another LEO driving by a meeting it seems

HD(?) at a place where the long Trail crosses the road

Two bikes at another Long Trail crossing

Horse race watchers looking the wrong way

Police officer on his brand new Chief in 1947, Burlington, VT

    Very cool, Harry!

I need to put you in touch with the state police historian on a couple of those... wonder if they have copies?

Love the pennant on the Indian in the first picture. I am surprised no one is reproducing those.

Off to pack for Rhinebeck. For those of you down there... stay dry amigos. It looks like a gullywasher is headed your way.

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

1st photo, in 1919, the bike is 1915 (Hedstrom motor, 3-spd). Good for the guy getting a bike, and it didn't have to be new.

The description accompanying the photo reads: "John Dalton, a long time plumbing contractor in Bristol village, and his Indian motorcycle just after his discharge from the US Army and return from France at the end of WWI."

Harry, I took this to mean that he purchased the (1915 ) Indian after returning from WWI, in 1919.

Great photos Harry! I'll jump on the bandwagon with Hawg on that early sickle ID... it does indeed look like a "Pope".
