Fork Lock removal

Hi guys,
I have my '66 Frame ready for powdercoat.. except the fork lock. I do not have a key for it.

Two questions

1) does it need to be removed before powdercoating
2) whether it does or does not need removed...how do I remove it?

I don't see any reason to remove it. Couple layers of masking tape and cut around with a razor. When its all done cut with the razor again. Bob

You can't use plain masking tape. Your powder coater will/should have tape that takes the heat. I took my frame to a locksmith and got a key made without having to remove it. Tell the locksmith it's a briggs & stratton.

When you powder coat something how hot does it get? I never relized that there was heat involved. I've never done it. I know first hand it's a bitch to blast it off. Bob L

Get a strong magnifying glass and a bright light. Look on the frame neck on the lock boss. You will find a small hole with a pin in it. Mark it and take it to a great welder. Have the welder weld a small blob on the end of the pin. Pull the pin upwards with a pair of pliers. Now you can remove the lock mechanism.
