    VIN Search

What is the recommended process to check a barn-find motorcycle VIN for lien and/or recorded ownership? Bike is a 1928 Harley JD.

Well, I know that in most states if it has been sitting a couple of decades any kind of VIN search would be just about impossible. In Wisconsin registrations go into Archives after non renewal for 2 to 3 consecutive years. You would for sure have to know what state it was last registered in to even get a start. There is no national registry.

    Good Luck, Jerry

Most states only maintain records for seven years, only info is from current owner.

A lien against a vehicle is recorded by the County Clerk (in the County seat), but it may be the County where the loan was made, the repair was done, or either party lived at the time. It may not be on the computer but it's still there.
