Here in New Jersey no one knows what the hand signals are, everyone waves back. I am sure I am breaking some law but I have found extending the INDEX finger and pointing the direction you intend to go is helpful. Be careful not to extend the middle finger especially in NJ it could result in a ticket or worse yet immediate death.

Instead of a white glove like Michael Jackson use a red glove on left hand when riding and signaling or make a bumper sticker stating hand signals used or make a "T" shirt stating the same thing in big bold font and wear when riding. But hand signals should also be on DMV tests think they are in book but not on test.

Even for judging, the AMCA makes allowances for added safety equipment. I'd just do what was suggested, install LED turn signals in a way that looks sort of factory. They can run on a 9v dry cell battery if you don't have a way to hide a 12v battery or tap into the stock wiring.

          To each his own, MDeSoucey,...

So, for my hack, I'd love a period custom airhorn.

          But this will do:

I use hand signals on any motorcycle, Lyle and I think pointing in the direction you intend to turn, and looking at the car behind you get's their attention. It's my belief that 40% of drivers don't use their turn signals (Eric fact) and those same idiots don't expect anyone else to, hence many easily avoidable accidents. I think when a cyclist makes a hand motion it gets attention because it's 'out of the ordinary.

My wife and I got smacked from behind on a '37, Folks...

With my hand in the air for a right turn into a driveway. The little old lady from Tiskilwa in a Chrysler said to the policeman that she saw us but didn't stop.

Somehow that didn't make it into the report.
