Looking for an original 1946 date stamped 16" rim. I have one of the original rims stamped 10/46 and would like to find another nice 1946 rim to build a correct pair before going the reproduction route. sssbriggs@msn.com Thanks Shane

That's been my understanding for decades too. However, I just purchased a Indian Motorcycle Data Book 1940-1953 by Rick Conner and according to him 3353 of the 6,974 1946 Chiefs produced in 1946 were sold from September through December. He doesn't provide any citations for this information so don't know if those Chiefs were built or just sold during that time frame. If built, then the October date would be about right for my engine and frame serial number. I thought early 1946 Indians came with 18" rims as standard. You would know more than me, but I do know that early post war motorcycles can be hard to define due to lingering material shortages, and high demand on over stressed manufacturers.Eric Smith

For anyone who is interested, I was able to confirm by an Indian Motorcycle Company Comparative Statement of Sales and Gross Profit April 1947 and Fiscal Year to Date 5-20-47 that 3,622 Chiefs were produced and sold from January 1946 through August 1946. The report also shows 3,353 1946 Chiefs were produced and sold after August 1946 and before April 1947. It shows specifically for my Chief Model (346 M), there were 289 produced. So, the one wheel I thought was an original rim date stamped October 1946 would be correct for the 55xx serial number. Thanks
