The actual model is identified as 1-1/4" Model M, stamped M-347 on top of the barrel. If you just want something that runs, any Chief or Scout 45 1-1/4" will probably work acceptably, as well as any common H-D equivalent including M-51.

Jr50rider!
Chief models started with a three: 341, 342, 343, 344, 350, 352.
The one exception I can think of is the "Bonneville".
(Models for Sport Scouts started with a six: 641, 642; 1" models starting with four, five, or eight will not fit the manifold.)
HD models used only two digits instead of three.
Any 1 1/4" Model M Linkert can be outfitted for a Chief, or any other machine with that manifold flange.
Differences in idle bleeds haven't proven critical, although you will certainly want an Indian main nozzle.

Sorry, dropped a stitch: just following Indian nomenclature in which the carburetor number matches the VIN. This suggests Springfield had boxes of M-344 left over....
All H-D Linkert 1-1/4" carburetors (except EL) use the same main nozzle for engines as small as 45" and large as 80". Indian did much better development with the nozzle following both the displacement and the state of tune. Frequently, Bonneville and standard use different nozzles.

The leap to the M-350 accommodated their new 80" motors, maybe.
Suddenly I don't want to trust my memory either...

PS: Once upon a time, a 'fresh' customer's Chief, running an HD M-51, got hot at highway speeds.
Little more than a Standard Indian nozzle (and losing a week's earnings figuring it out) made it right.Last edited by T. Cotten; 01-28-2019, 04:16 PM.AMCA #776
