Maybe this would get by until you find a real one.

Only in chopper rags and catalogs, Deebs....

The 'beehive" looked like a beehive (and the sidecar pilot lamp as well, of course).

I just saw replys. I appreciate them all. First I have bought two of the repo fender lamps. Just for the red plastic beehive shaped lens. Great idea, but I have them already, but thanks for trying to help.
Now for the next message from 47Chief, (sorry man I had to shorten your handle) As Cotten definitely knows the taillight that you call a beehive is actually called a boat tail, (I'm not sure if that's one word or two) but it got the slang term "beehive" which has stuck for many years. But most say it was mistaken for the earlier Harley taillight that did indeed look like a bee hive just like the small red lens on top of sidehack fender light which also looks like Bee hive. But thanks for trying to school me.
Cotten I just now read your link, which was a very detailed explanation of basically what I was talking about. I am going to copy and save it on my phone. Does it mention the name boat tail as I couldnt find it, am I missing something? Thanks for the support.

              Sorry, Keith,

"Boat tail" is a totally new term to me. I thought they were called the 'Art Deco" light.

              But I'm from the Midwest.

Now I have to do research and find the info where I read that . It was in harley literature. I hate posting or saying incorrect info. I have to hopefully find it now. I think It was from a thirties Enthusiast magazine where they were talking about the new style taillight. Or im starting to get dementia.
                Thanks

I have a copy of a 1939 sales brochure and it mentions with a picture "New tail lamp is the modern style graces 1939 models". The September 1938 Enthusiast featuring the new 1939 models. Also with the same picture is says, "Now cast your eyes on the streamlined new tail light featured on all 1939 models." I have heard it referred to as the "Streamlined" tail light. Maybe that was thought of as Harley's nickname for it.

I’ve heard the boat tail reference also. If memory serves it could have been in the Palmer book??

Now that I think about it, Folks,...

I might have heard those fiberglass-body Superglides and Sportsters called 'boat tails', but nobody cared.

No doubt all of this confusion belongs to whomever named 'skull eye' and 'cat's eye' dashes, 'dog-bone' risers, 'fat-bob', 'turtle', and 'coffin' chopper tanks, 'P-pads' (nobody knew "pillion"?), 'sissy bars', and of course...

                      "Hogs".

                      ...Cotten
PS: 'Wish-bone' frames, 'slab-side' shovels, 'sergeant's stripes', 'cabbage' or 'cheese cutter' fender bumpers?

                      "Plumbers' manifold"?

                      "Distributors" on harleys?

'Bomb sight' venturies at least makes sense, but we may never know who coined any of these terms.

More useless tail light trivia: the 71/72 FX Boat Tail used a 65 Impala tail light lens.

Ok guys Thanks one and all . It's so funny cause this whole conversation came out because I've been trying for three years to come up with that glass lens without having to pay 750.00 for a complete unit when I have three stock ones and just need the lens.
But Otis71 called it. On page 692 of Palmers Third edition volume 2, on the left bottom of page, he spells it out Where he called it the streamlined taillight but it really had no name from factory but also said that 40 years ago it was mainly known as the boattail ( one word ) which makes it fall into my realm because I was just getting into this life 50 years ago.
He also said why it was called a boattail , but you have to look it up because I don't know how to cut and paste. And its too much to copy.
Thanks for helping me to find info as I was pretty sure I was correct.

One last thing because my friend bought one new. In 1970 I believe or 71 The first superglide had that red, white and blue paint job, and that's fiberglass rear fender that was called the boattail. I think that was the only color they came in the first year and it wasn't a big seller so it was a very short lived thing. Most people took them off and chopped them so finding one with original paint now is a big deal. I didn't get into sportsters back then cause they were called girls bikes. Now I know different but it was different back then. Not a whole lot of Harleys and there was a lot of stigma around the whole sportster thing. My first bike was a 2 year old police special, Full dress blue and white with ghat iconic stuart warner, black and white police special speedometer written in script
