If you want to dip your toe in the belt-driven arena for short $$, try one of the Timeless machines. http://www.timelessmotorcompany.com/classic.html

I've done all kinds of modifications on mine, installed a Magneto, and added a more modern carb. I've added some period accessories and am currently working on adding an replica acetylene generator (made out of an old Pyrene fire extinguisher) that will hold some 18V power tool batteries and will power an LED element in a vintage Brass headlamp.

The bike runs like a little top and I have no qualms about riding it, parking it and doing whatever I want with it.

It's no substitute for the 'real' thing and I'll probably own a real belt-drive machine some day. But you can certainly have a ton of fun with a Timeless and not worry about banging around on it. You can get the whole bike for about the price of a set of cases for a belt-drive machine.

Well, the Sturgis and the Whizzer ARE both belt drive, but I am thinking of the teen's style with tension lever for clutch action, and probably a single cylinder .

Europe has some nice early, early stuff... and if it does not say Harley, Indian or Yale on it, it's a lot less expensive... Norton, NSU, Peugeot, BSA, Simplex, etc.

If you go to www.ebay.co.uk (the UK eBay site) and search on early bikes, there is a lot of stuff and there are several exporters that can do the shipping. It costs about the same to get a bike from Europe as it does to ship from Ca. to NY... I shipped my BMW Dakar over to Germany for $600!

This is just a small sample... There is a lot of stuff overseas. Next time I am over, I'll be hard-pressed not to be looking at some of those neat early Triumphs, etc.
