  • 1936 Harley Kicker Cover Mint

1936 Harley kicker cover in great shape. Date code J6. Drill though vent. Filler treads in great shape. Only one crack on the the inside shaft boss. I didn't remove the bushings do to most people needing to make custom ones. This cover is one of the best ones I've seen in some time. Bob At 201-656-0737

    Bob,
That is not a 1936 EL cover. It is a October 1946 which would be correct for a 1947 model. A '36 cover looks a lot different and doesn't have a date code on it.

The 36 Cover should have a recess around the kicker hole. They also made an early 36 Cover that had a milled flat spot for the vent unlike the later style that had the raised boss.

There is a milled area there (See pic) The vent was the only reason I thoght it was a 36. But what also puzzles me is why anyone would take the time to do this. I thought date coding didn't start until 38.

That boss was milled flat and then drilled for the Vent. The standard 46 Cover still had the Boss but the breather went over to the trans case. The kicker cover boss just sat there undrilled and unused in 46. The early 36 Milled Cover I mentioned above had NO boss. They just milled into the cover itself and then drilled for the breather. Later in 36 and the boss appeared and it was used for that breather. I don't know how many early 36's had ther milled flat area. Maybe someone else has an idea. 46el.

After I initially responded I thought about why somone would do that to your cover??. I'm listing a 39 Knuckle Trans case tonight on ebay. Someone milled the same flat spot you have on the cover and drilled and installed a breather on the case i'm selling. Seeing the 39 case had no boss once you mill a flat in that valley were the boss should be it is like a drain in a bathtub. It sits low enough that if the bike is upright the water would flow backwards into the tranny. Putting the vent on the kicker cover is smarter. I'm guessing whoever did yours back in the day had an early case with no vent so they drilled your cover? Nobody cared about originallity years ago. The auction number is 2305 9766 2543. Check out what they did to the trans case. 46el .

I have a 44 date coded kicker cover with the vent and a friend of mine has a 43 cover with it. I suspect they were replacements for early covers. Seem to be too nicely done to have been done by an individual.

The first vented cases in 39 were milled and drilled and tapped without benefit of a raised boss. Looked like a step backwards to me. Most have a late 39 date code.

Thanks guys. I thought I found the golden goose. Years ago I bought so much crap, you never know what your going to find up on that pallet shelving. I'll sell it at Oley as it is. I don't see any reasoning to weld it up. It's a nice cover for it's age. My 48 has two tags on it. The date code and then another just below the kicker. Is there one missing on this or was there only suppost to be one? I got to go cry in my beer! Thanks, Bob L

Jerry- The Trans case I mentioned above and just listed tonight on ebay has an A-9 or January 39 Date Code. Probably mid year 39?
