Ed, i had the same corrosion issue on a speedway Motor i bought years ago. The simplest & most effective method I implemented, i will list below as food for thought.
#1. The JD Motor will have to be taken apart, but not to do the repair, but because it appears to have been left for dead. Having said this, it will be easier to do the repair work tho. Obviously it was sitting on dirt, and is completely saturated, hence the moon craters in the casting on the crank pin side, where it obviously sat tilted. The timing chest case side looks decent.
#2. The procedure I used was to blast the cases, whatever method is preferable. Then, the major gouge will have to be welded. This will have to be in the hands of a competent welder, since those castings are a supreme nightmare when that much porosity is imbedded after many years, to have created that chronic damage. But, there appears to be plenty of parent metal left on the porous casting area to do this repair. I can't give you wall thickness tolerance on the casting area in question. Maybe Mark Masa could give out that information?
#3. Hopefully the welding was successful. Then a light sanding on the infected porous area, and a good cleaning after sanding. Then you can apply JB Weld in skim coat layers over the porous area. I heard that MMA 420 works better than JB. When you're satisfied with the appearance, then you can lightly sand the application, to try and make it look presentable, and then paint it aluminum color.
#4. Your JD is obviously not going to be a high point motorcycle with this repair patch, but outside of that, who crawls under the cases to view your repair anyway? You can always make a nice professional aluminum skid plate, and brag the JD used to run hiil climbs~hahaha.
#5. Like I've mentioned prior, I used this procedure on a sPeEdWaY Motor, and I ran it on the1/2 miles for 5 years without any issues, with a motor that has 14:1 compression & an extreme RPM redline!!!
#6. All of the above can easily be skipped, and you can just purchase a set of used cases at...$1000 to 1500 USD. Also, I'm going off simple pictures, and not an actual motor right in front of my inspection abilities. I hope this helps you Ed in your decision to score the JD Motor, Good Luck.
