  • Jerry Doering

Jerry (Gerald) Arthur Doering, age 93, passed away on January 15, 2021, in his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Mountainville, NY on June 18, 1927, to Walter and Reta Doering. He was one of eleven children, and he had fond memories of his childhood. He enjoyed swimming, ice skating, and, later, riding motorcycles. In 1944, his father helped him to buy his first motorcycle — an Indian Scout. This would begin Jerry’s lifelong passion for riding and collecting antique motorcycles.
Jerry married his neighbor and best friend, Kate. Their marriage lasted over seventy years. Jerry began his own electrical contracting company, working as an electrician for over 25 years. In 1967, Jerry helped his son, Ted, start Ted Cycle in their family garage. In 2011, Jerry and Ted founded the Gerald A. Doering Foundation and the Motorcyclepedia Museum in Newburgh, New York to share their extensive antique motorcycle collection with the public. One of Jerry’s proudest achievements was his Indian Motorcycle Timeline, a collection of every Indian motorcycle that was in production from 1901 to 1954.
Jerry served on the board of directors of the Antique Motorcycle Foundation. He was a member of the Century Museum Village of Dutchess County, and an honorary lifetime member of the Black Rock Fish & Game Club in Mountainville, New York.Jerry Doering
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Kate. He is also survived by his son, Ted Doering, and Ted’s partner, Jean Lara; his daughter, Anna Reinhard, and Anna’s husband, Helmut Reinhard; his daughter, Christine Doering, and Christine’s partner, Eugene Koloski; his beloved niece, Catherine Stack; his sister-in-law, Patricia Stack; his sister, Lois Terp; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. His family extends special thanks to his caregivers: Mary, Milton, and Bani, as well as Dr. Edward Schneider and Father Jeffrey Maurer.
Those who knew Jerry will remember him as a kind, gentle, smart man who had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a best friend to everyone. He will be greatly missed and live in our hearts forever.
There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Thursday, January 21 at St. Mary’s Church, Washingtonville, NY with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Jerry’s memory can be made to St. Mary’s Church, or to the Motorcyclepedia Museum.

My deepest condolences to Jerry's family, friends, and untold number of customers who's motorcycles would be in a landfill, collecting dust, or just an un-realistic dream had it not been for V-Twin. God bless him, and thanks to he and Ted for all the help they have been to this great old bike passion we have.

I met Jerry with Ted at the opening of the Motorcyclepedia Museum, and he told me of his early days working on small engines. He was an old guy then, but still with enthusiasm for old bikes and a twinkle in his eye. That line-up of each year Indian is a tribute to him and really something to behold. My condolences to Ted and the whole family.
