clutch friction plate.jpg
I've had the VL for a little more than 2-years now. Some of you may recall the rebuild I did on the machine.
I have to admit I did not pay much attention to the clutch during the rebuild. The plates seemed fine, still serviceable. I've been riding the bike for the past year now. All short trips around the neighborhood to get used to all of the idiosyncrasies. Now that I can operate it reasonably safely and with some reliability I noticed things like the possibility of a slipping clutch. After disassembly today I found the clutch in generally good shape. I am concerned about this friction plate though. Showing in the pic is the plate/side against the inner drive disc, 2489-30, All other friction discs show what appeared to be normal wear with a small amount of glazing. I removed the glazing easily with sandpaper and roughed up the steels. Steels and fibers are flat as well. Since they seem to be in good condition with plenty of wear left to the fiber I'll just reassemble. Unless of course this scoring indicates some other issue that needs attention.
I'm also curious to know if the rivets are loose can they be snugged up with a couple of blows from set or some other punch type device. Or should the rivets be replaced? Not a lot of play, but enough that I noticed it when buffing them with sandpaper.
I'm curious if anyone else has seen this kind of marking on a clutch plate. The lines are gouges, bearly noticeable but gouges nevertheless.
Best regards,
Loch
