Replying to another members topic or comments

You’re reading a post in the Member Bike Build Thread (Topic) and you want to ask a question about a procedure or product. How do you reply?

There’s at least three ways to get a reply (comment) started on an existing topic in the forums so let’s look at them and see what to do.

    Start a reply

To start a reply to an existing post start with clicking the “Post Reply” button on the top left of the screen of comments. Move your computer pointer over the post reply button and click. This will automatically move your text cursor into the text creation box at the bottom of the screen. In the text creation box you can write a reply. When you are done with your reply move your computer pointer over and click on the Post Reply button in the lower right corner of the screen just outside of the reply box. This will post your reply.

Another way to start a reply

A second way to start to post a reply is to scroll down the screen of posts and you will see the reply box. Move your computer pointer inside the blank text message area where it says “Write something …” and click the pointer – it will place your cursor in the box and you can start creating your reply. Like in #1 above when you complete your reply move your computer pointer over and click on the Post Reply button in the lower right corner of the screen just outside of the reply box. This will post your reply.

Start a reply with a quote

To provide context to your reply you may want to have a text quote of the post you are replying to in your reply. You can do this automatically. Here’s how to do this. As you look at the comment you want to reply to look in the lower right-hand corner of the comment box and you will see some small light text. Each of the words can execute a function when you click on them. If you click on the text with quote marks that says Quote it will copy the whole message you want to reply to and paste it in the reply box at the bottom of the screen. You can then move your pointer down and insert your cursor below the quote and you can start typing in your reply. When complete move your computer pointer over and click on the Post Reply button in the lower right corner of the screen just outside of the reply box. This will post your reply with the quote.

Some tips that may be helpful

Note that when using the quote function, you may want to remove some of the quote and leave just what is relevant to your reply.

If you are replying in a thread and choose not to use a quote but want to reference a specific comment someone else made it helps to use the comments’ unique number so readers that follow can get a reference of what you are commenting on. You should notice that as you look at a comment, in the upper right corner of each comment box it is numbered with its own number starting with #1 for the original post. Each subsequent post will be numbered 2, 3, 4, etc.

Note the screens of comments once filled up will start a new screen and continue to add screens of comments as each screen is filled. Some threads of a post, especially in the Member Bike Build thread can go to hundreds of screens of comments.
