  • Calling all AMCA members to come ride

I guess this forum is as good a place as any to tell this story.

My wife and I were on our way to Florida last May to be with my mother who suffered a heart attack (BTW, mom is doing much better). Shortly after we crossed the FL border on I-75, my wife said she smelled something funny and it quickly revealed itself as our 40' motorhome being ablaze. By the time I got it pulled over, I had enough time to through two suitcases and one briefcase out the door. While the motorhome was totaled, we were safe and I was able to get the trailer (loaded with 2 fully restored 1965 Pans and a bunch of parts) away fro the fire. Turns out something got messed up with the turbocharger and the floor caught fire.

There we were in Jennings, FL. The fire chief, Bill Trinder, and his crew treated us like we were family. In fact, the whole town came to our rescue. Chief Trinder drove me around most of the afternoon in his truck helping me secure a truck to tow us to our destination, a hitch to handle our trailer, to the auto parts store to get a light harness adapter, and to the hotel where we were able to clean up and get over the trauma.

During the course of our travels, I discovered Chief Trinder do be a great conversationalist and a motorcycle afficianado. He asked me if I thought a motorcycle ride and barbecue would be a good fund raiser for their department and I told him I thought it would go over great. It seems like he took my advice because I just received notice of their fund-raising ride on October 4th of this year.

The ride is planned for a 10:30am start and will cover over 70 miles of Hamilton County and White Springs (really beautiful country). The charge is $25 for singles and $40 for doubles and includes a meal and a t-shirt. They also plan live music and, I can assure all of you, great conversation.

We owe a debt to the people of Jennings and Jasper and we intend to come down from Kansas to ride with them and support them.

I am asking all of the folks in the area who love to ride to consider joining us on October 4th. Most of my Sunshine Chapter brothers and sister can make it pretty easily if schedules permit and I would love to see a big turnout of AMCA machines.

I have attached their flyer to this post and I hope I can count on all of you to help us support these wonderful people and repay the the debt. They renewed my faith in my fellow man and proved to me that neighbors helping neighbors is what it is all about. Please join us if you can.
