YBAMCA Mt. Diablo Ride

this weekend! An 80 mile loop through the back-country of the
East Bay culminating in an over-the-top ride on Mt. Diablo. (summit
3849’) At this time of year the weather should be warm, not hot.
Ride starts at the Blackhawk Automotive Museum, just off Highway
680 in Danville (directions below). Arrive with your bikes, starting at
9AM, and unload them in an off the street parking area. Don’t be late
because at 10 we’ll meet a docent who will lead our group on a tour of
the extensive exhibits inside. The museum has offered to let us park
our bikes on the plaza in front of the museum while we take the tour.
Normal admission to the museum is $8, but our tour rate is $6.
At noon our tour will end and we’ll head out on the bikes towards
the back country. The route will take us on Morgan Territory Road
(Pavement is terrible! Put a good seat on your rigid-frame bike) around
the remote east side of Mt. Diablo and eventually deposit us back in
civilization near Clayton. Lunch will be on your own at the Guadalajara
Grill (& cantina!).
After lunch we’ll head out for the actual assent. We’ll have to
negotiate suburban traffic for a few miles, but eventually we’ll enter
Mt. Diablo State Park from the north entrance (the park’s $6 entry fee,
per vehicle, will be collected at lunch). Switch backs, curves and the
long grade take riders to the summit where incredible views are
possible. Depending on the weather, the Sierras might be in view, as
well as San Francisco, the mothball fleet, and on a very clear day,
it’s possible to see the Farallon Islands.
After checking our brakes, the group will head down-hill to exit
the park at the south entrance and return to where our trucks &
trailers are parked. Everyone can load up and be on the road prior to
darkness.
*****Directions to the museum:
From I-680 take Crow Canyon Road east (Between Walnut Creek & I-580)
In approximately 4 miles watch for gas stations, services etc. Turn
right on Camino Tassajara.
At the second stop light, turn left on Tassajara Ranch Road. Note the
Arco station across the street.
As you crest the hill going into the shopping center, turn right into
the parking lot & unload there.
