AMCA Hires New Executive Director

Well wishes on your new position with the AMCA. I am one of the crusty old farts that over the years has seen many changes in this club. Debating these changes is sometimes contentious(I lifted this from a previous post) but always interesting and entertaining. I will be working with you in the upcoming AMCA Judging season and welcome opinions/critique/support to help better the Judging System as it exists in the AMCA. I can't wait for 2014 to get here. It is currently 7 degrees here in Wisco and riding motorcycles is but a distant memory(YUK!). I have a handshake and many questions for you when we meet. Later.....Don

Don - Thanks for your kind words. I too, look forward to meeting you in person, and learning more about the AMCA Judging System. For those of us here in "The Valley of the Sun" (aka the Phoenix area), this is our "paradise season", with warm sunny days and cool nights. However, after Memorial Day, it is HELL ON EARTH for 4 months with temperatures exceeding 110-115 degrees in the daytime (one day last August, it actually hit 119!!), and no cooling off at night. If you ever visit Arizona in the winter, I have fine vintage two bikes for you to choose from to ride.

Hey guys, give John a chance! Not any of us can say we operate, out of our own pocket, a vintage motorcycle website! That in itself says a lot about his love for antique motorcycles! And riding for over 40 years, no matter the brands, says a lot for the guy also. So, don't prejudge him, stop and talk to him at the next National you attend and get to know him or just PM him with your concerns.

You and me both Jeff. Bigger and slicker isn't progress for me. It feels corporate to me and we all know what a slippery slope that is. Ever since Bob left as President I have been defending this ship through all it's errors and misjudgements, taxes, magazine outside sales, museums, judging, and more. After more than thirty years I'm tired. I rode my old bike with friends before I boarded this ship I guess I can ride my bike with friends after I'm left on the dock. I wish it nothing but fair winds and smooth seas but just because I liked the old way doesn't mean it was the wrong way. I think it was the right way. I shall abide!

Thanks Eric! The T100C is light and nimble and a lot of fun to ride! A similar 500cc model that The Fonz, James Dean, and Bob Dylan rode (and crashed!) back in Woodstock, NY back in the day! (lol)

Thanks Larry, for your kind words. I have been to many places around the world, but I have never been to Kentucky. I heard there is good riding there and would love to visit (and RIDE there) someday in the near future.

I would like to point out that just because there may be relatively few members in any area, please keep in mind that only eight AMCA members are required to comprise an AMCA chapter. Here in the Southeast, NC, SC and GA, we have three small chapters that have formed a coalition to put on the Southern National Meet. If you can get together with others that have a similar interest in starting a chapter, just contact Fred Davis on the Board and he can help you get the ball rolling.

And by the way, Fred does an excellent job and can help you work your way through the process. Also, our Catawba Valley Chapter has members from about 1-1/2 hours away and I am sure that is not unusual for other chapters.

I believe the important point to take from this is that regular gatherings and large annual meets that work in states with high population densities are unlikely to be appropriate for AMCA members in the Southwest. To serve existing AMCA members in the region, and attract new ones, in ways beyond having the magazine show up in the mailbox will require different solutions than establishing a new chapter. While a new chapter sounds nice, the distances involved almost certainly mean that its monthly meetings could be held in a telephone booth (if one still could be found).

'The Antique Motorcycle' is a great member benefit. But, for people in the Southwest that's effectively the only member benefit. Yes, they would be very welcome to attend, say, Wauseon, but that's 2000 miles away. So, one thing the new Executive Director might do is to start encouraging people to think of innovative solutions for the "Southwest problem."
