Was the H-D tank decal that slanted on 1939s, and was the I beam fork still used in '39? I thought the decals and emblems were generally level to the horizontal frame tubes. Just throwing out the question to members that know more about the 1939 aesthetics, and paint schemes.Originally posted by BigLakeBob View PostLast edited by exeric; 07-16-2024, 05:59 PM.Eric Smith

That is a 39WLDD, big fin cylinders and alloy heads. Yes, 45s still used I-beam forks in '39. H-D called the WLDD the WLD "Special" when it appeared. Note the angle of the decals in the factory literature.Originally posted by exeric View Post

Good observation Eric. Not sure why I didn't pick up on that before, but as soon as you said it the decals look really angled to me. Here is a picture of Armando Magri with a WLD from Frank Murray, racing in the 1939 Oakland 200. The emblems sure look angled in this picture.Originally posted by exeric View Post

Magri did finish !st but they awarded it to Cottrell because the referee messed up. Armando would tell you the same as he did me but unfortunately he's no longer with us. Hence the reason they were both holding it. True story.DrSprocket

Read Armando's biography which I've posted here. I wasn't there as the race happened before my father was even born, but Armando's recounting sure sounds believable to me. Go to page 4 for the story about the '39 race. https://forum.antiquemotorcycle.org/...-and-now/page4Originally posted by badger34
Well, reports of the day say Cottrell took the lead at lap 152 and went unchallenged from there. There was a scoring issue reported that affected 3rd and 4th places but I find nothing to say Cottrell's win was questioned.
