  • End thrust adjustment on 28 rear hub

Been mystified by the excess rear hub end play on my 28. After tearing it apart and studying it for quite a while, I discovered that the two Bakelite washers (3983-23) are missing. I assume they act as a buffer between the two steel thrust washers, one stationary and one turning with the hub? Is there a better material too make these out of and what is the thickness of them? Any help would be appreciated.

There are also small brass shim washers that fit between a shoulder on the axle and the non threaded inner thrust race. These were available in different sizes and were used to adjust end play.

Mark, thanks for the the reply. The brass washers are in place but are of no effect because of the missing Bakelite spacers. I took them all out and it made no difference prior to the discovery of the missing parts.
