53 Chief Muffler fit-placement

I have a replacement muffler for my '53 I am trying to fit before painting. Greer's stated that the tabs may need to be moved and re-welded to fit the bike correctly. In mock up the shield is close to the bottom zerk as you can see. I have looked at the restored blue '53 on Greer's website (under For Sale bikes) and saw the shield tab was further to the outside. What is the correct placement of this shield tab and what is it's real purpose? Thanks in advance. ~Boone
