  • 47 sidecar frame

Is this a Knuckle frame or earlier?

That is a pre Knuckle frame. Note the curved bar for the top center mount, not correct for Knuckle or later. there was an accessory kit sold to allow mounting of that style frame on Knuckles but the bits are very hard to find.

Just for your reference in your search, You can find the year and serial number (looks just like a motor number beginning with year, then "LE or "LS" or "M" or a few others, then about 4 numbers), by looking on most old H-D sidecar frames on the fore-and-aft frame tube, just in front of the rear axle. That puts it just about where your boot would go past when kicking over the bike. Would be something similar to "47LE1234" on that eBay sidecar that Neil74 posted.

Even that VL frame probably has a number, same place, if the seller knew where to look for it. I've sent eBay inquiries to sidecar sellers before, asking them what the numbers say on the frame tube and they've found and reported them.

Thanks again Sarge, by the time this search is over I'll have way more knowledge about sidecars than I ever imagined. Has any one dealt with Bill's Custom Cycles or Zimalady out of Penn. they have a couple of frames on e-bay but they don't respond to questions.

Yes Neil, I have purchased from Bill on many occasions. His replys are scarce, so I'd suggest you call him...I have been able to "catch" him one or twice "on duty" at which time he responded well to my inquiries. It seems to help if you "infer" you are a buying customer for the item in question!

Never had a bad dealing and received what I paid for with no surprises. With that being said, I'd read ALL his negative feedbacks, and take the comments with a grain of salt....you'll see what I mean once you read them. In this world, (I doubt it will be likewise in the next!), there always has to be somebody you can't please!

Good luck...he has had that sidecar frame I think you are looking at for some time now...it's worth a call however!
