From the January 1910 Wisconsin Motorist magazine:

    IMPORTANT MOTORCYCLE RULES
The Harley-Davidson Motor Co., Milwaukee, is responsible for the following set of motorcycle rules entitled "Farmers' Anti-Motorcycle Society Rules of the Road," from which motorcyclist will doubtless receive much benefit should they give them careful perusal. According to the Harley-Davdison people:

"The following is the new code agreed upon by the Farmers' Anti-Motorcycle Protective Society, which has just held its annual convention in the different states in the Union".
    The rules are as below:
"1. On discovering an approaching team, the motorist must stop off-side and cover his machine with a tapaulin painted to correspond with the scenery.
"2. In case a motorcylcist makes a team run away, the penalty will be $50 for the first mile, $100 for the second mile, $200 for the third mile, and doubling until the said team stops, in addition to the usual damages.
"3. The speed limit on country roads this year will be secret and the penalty for violations will be $10 for every mile caught going in excess of said limit.
"4. On approaching a corner where he cannot command a view of the road ahead, the motorcyclist must dismount not less than 100 yards from the turn, toot his horn, ring a bell, fire off a revolver, halloo, and send up three bombs at intervals of three minutes.
"5. Motorcycles must again be seasonably painted, that is, so that they will merge with the pastoral ensemple, and not be so startling. They must be green in spriong, golden in summer, red in autum, and speckled white in winter.
"6 Motorcycles running on country roads at night, must send up a rocket every mile, and wait ten minutes for the road to clear. They may then proceed carefully, blowing their horns and shooting sky rockets.
"7 All members of the society will give up Sunday to chasing motorcylists, shooting and beating them, making arrests, and otherwise discouraging country riding on that day.
"8 In case a horse will not pass a motorcycle, notwithstanding the scenic tarpaulin, the motorcyclist must take the machine apart as rapidly as possible, conceal the parts about his person and walk down the road.
"9 If a motorcylist should stop in a village, said motocyclist must have full knowledge of his machine and enlighten the usual crowd as to why his motorcycle is the best.

So I'm not the first person who dislikes loud pipes? I feel so safe at Bike Week........

But that is the first time I've seen them refered to as Open Muffler Boobs. Makes me smile.

Gotta admit though, my Henderson came originally without a muffler, and is that way today. Most of my bikes have original pipes or at least a decent muffling system.

I'm sure Seymor Crolius wasn't to happy about this ad. They didn't spell so plenty good
          either.

Gosh, and all this time I thought motorcycles as "outlaw" demon machines only happened after WWII with bad boy type clubs and "The Wild One" movie.

That's what most books say and they must be true, right?

              Great stuff!
