  • 1920 J details

Chris or anyone has a factory picture of the 1920 J? This bike is restored in the 1960:ies and there is some uncertainity should the nuts % bolts be parkerized like they are now as on later models, or nickeled like in the teens? Comments on other details welcome!

Just from quickly looking at Jerry Hatfield's book "Inside Harley Davidson", it looks to me that the 1920 factory photo shows parkerizing on the rear brake anchor and associated frame fasteners. The rear sprocket looks like it is nickel but everything that bolts to the axel plates and the fork rocker hardware appears to be parkerized. I wonder if that was a military specification that was phased into standard production?

Phased in? Heh. Reportedly, the reason The MoCo went to "khaki" after WW1 was to use up all the OD paint they'd acquired for a war that lasted only a year-and-a-half.
Here's a stock photo of a restored 20J. May not be accurate enuf for your purposes:

I would have looked at my 1920 J but Fiskis wasn't asking what parts were rusted. The flat tank J's are my favorite of the J series and just about of all Harleys. They are absolutely gorgeous but they do look a bit plain at first glance. The more you look at them, the more you love them.

Genuine rust rules. Anyone can make a sloppy restoration!

Yes, thank you Chris. The scene looks like home. This picture is so clear that I can leave the hardware as is on the bike and take a print of this as dokumentation for judging. Can you see on the original the serial nr? 4 or 5 digits.
