  • generator gear lash

So, the only way to set the lash is with the timing cover removed. But then you can't mount the generator with the screws without "MacGyvering" spacers with countersunk ends to accept the screw heads. So, do you just strap the genny to the motor, check the lash, and add shims under the body to correct the lash? Unless the genny body and the cradle are perfect, I don't see how one could ever get that correct. Any thoughts?

I don't know about '30 and '31 generators but from 1932 to 1969 that's exactly how they done it and still do. Only I screw the screws through the cam cover to center it then see what shims will go under the cradle and then snug the strap. Everyone I know does it the same way. The idler inside the case and the ger on the generator must be close because in fifty years on multiple bikes it's never caused a problem. Know the rocket scientist can reply.

I've done it on assembled motors with a little modeling clay in between the gear teeth for years. Shows you where they mesh and you can see too wide a gap, from no spacer and no lash to two or three paper strips. Usually one is enough.
