  • HD Special thread pitches

I'm planning on ordering taps and dies for the "special" thread pitches used on early Harleys. I primarily work on Big Twins from the 30's to the 60's but I'm also working on a 1924 J model. I'm aware of the 7/16 x 16 size used on some head bolts and the 1/4 x 24 size used on oil pumps and other parts. What other "special" sizes should I order?

    Thanks,
    Steve Slaminko

What carb is on the J, Steve?

    Even Linkerts need at least #12-24, 1/4"-32, 1/4"-40, 5/16"-32, 3/4"-20... etc., etc.

    HXs are far worse.

          Thanks everyone,

The information supplied will allow me to pick which ones to buy.

Cotton - The JD carb is stamped HX154.

Expect about another half-dozen weird threads for HXs at least, Steve!

That is if you jump off the cliff, and try to do them right.

Schebler even made HXs with a metric 14mm bore, so you will always need just one more tool.
