Sport Scout 1938 vin #638 101 and up ,according to Jerry HAtfields Resto guide.
1938 was first year for new oil pump, larger cylinders and fins and the new tear drop instrument panel with gray face gauges and gray grips, like the 38 chiefs.

Are the 1940 cylinders different again? My FDB had the dog-leg bend in the vertical tube for fin clearance.

According to Hatfields the 39 cyliners are same as 38 except for the guides for the new valve covers,!940 cylinders and heads were changed to new "steamlined with larger fins.
He also has figure 331 1940-1942 sport scout cyinders, evolution of the square base.It appears there was three versions where the square base went from slight to more pronounced and apparantley all had the same FNs.
        Isnt your fdb a 42?

Yes, white plate #45, sold to Al Perry years ago.
Paid $300 for it in 1978.
