  • Brake spring lengths

    Hi.
I’m piecing a bike together and currently working on the front and rear brakes to get the frame up on its wheels. Has anyone got a list, or know the free lengths of any of the brake springs?
The measurement would be taken from inside the hooks of the springs.
Rear brake shoe spring, old number 4050-30 or new 41835-30.
Springer brake-Pan front drum brake shoe springs. Old 2964-35. new 44484-35.
Rear brake lever return spring. 2964-26, or 42427-26.
    Steve.

Dear Steve, 4050-30 is 84 mm between the inside of the hooks. This is the weaker spring at the non-pivot end of the rear brake.

Thanks Steve. I have a few different springs of differing lengths but they don’t have part numbers on them. The older parts manuals give description about everything in the back couple of pages... except springs. I appreciate your help.
      Regards Steve.

Palmer's restoration guide has a brake spring chart in it on page 247. It give part number, application, length, wire size, coil size, etc.

Thanks Bob. I really appreciate the info.
Thanks for the page number Robbie. Unfortunately I don’t have a book.
