      Cotten!

We chatted at Davenport about this ball detent for the low speed lift lever and I used your technique of welding a small rod to the ball - voila out it came! I purchased what I was told was the correct spring while at the swap meet but it turns out it was the longer spring 27405-26. After reassembling with a new ball I only then discovered that it bound up. Pull it again and now see that the spring is incorrect. I've searched high and low for the proper spring but so far to no avail even using the Schebler part #DL66 and Indian #102460.

Any thoughts on where to locate the correct spring? Right now I'm leaning toward just buying a new entire lever assembly but if i can find the right spring then I can have a spare.

      Nice to have met you!

It happens to the best of us, Marc!

I covet my small commissioned supply..
But there's little reason you cannot clip a turn off of a choke detente spring, and put the good end against the ball.

With a polished-down ball on a filler rod handle, you can compress the spring for inspection, without it becoming captured.

Usually the spring is shot after the heat of welding out the ball.

PS: Out-and-in-and-out can make them not 'snap' back in, but shoot back out.
Please do not ask me how I safely re-stake them, 'cuz its proprietary.

          Marc,
I recently had to make a choke shaft for a DLX38 and only had a long spring.
Snipped of a coil or two and it now works fine.
          Cheers

Make a spare dozen, by any chance, Mick?

Slotting .032" isn't tricky, but setting up all the screw hole operations is a bother.

(If you're gonna make one, might as well make a production out of it!)

              Tom,
It was more an exercise in desperation than anything else.

I couldn't find the correct shaft, so I used what I could get and had in stock.
Schebler throttle shaft, Linkert lift cam, correct NOS thumb lever, long detent spring etc.
And to make things worse, I only had a Linkert lift arm at the time, so I had to reprofile the lift cam.

It all works, but it wouldn't get any points in judging.

I live in hope that I will find the correct choke shaft one day.

Getting the peen on the cam right is something, Mick,...

That I don't want to draw the judges' attention.

                (doh.)

Getting the flat on the shaft in the correct orientation was the hardest part, not going for originality, the peen was just hit it with a hammer over and over again.

I don't have that liberty, Mick!

Schebler must have pressed it before the rest of the shaft was machined.

                    Or it would have crushed.

I just put the shaft in some soft jaws and took it gently.
Used a small ball peen hammer, taped the cam on and peened over the shaft.
I filed the shaft OD and flat down by hand.

Once again, I needed to get my 29 running, so anything goes. I wouldn't sell one of these to anyone, just for myself. It looks good on the outside.

                        Don't tell anybody, Mick,..

But after roll-peening, I often silver-solder, just to "nickel" the cam.

Then I lathe dress the 'upset', with a little center pip.

I can spot mine in a heartbeat; Still aughta charge more.

If you are supplying these as a service, that is the type of thing you need to do.

I have a DLX66 that needs some work. How is your work load?
                          Cheers

I will stab myself in the eye first, then figure out how to get some machining done.
                              Cheers

I should have thought of that.
