Difference between JD transmission case and a 35 VL case

I am having trouble distinguishing between a '27 JD transmission and 1935 VL case.
The 35 VL is the one with no ears on the sprocket side.
Can someone fill me in on the details .

The easiest tell is the position on the adjusting screw boss. On a JD it is just INBOUND of the kicker cover gasket surface and on a VL it is OUTBOUND of that surface.
Also, a 27 case would be stamped with a 27-xxxx in the serial number boss on the back side.
All 1926-29 JD cases are the same but they stopped stamping the year-serial number into them after 1927.

Thanks, that description of where the adjuster makes the id simple.
I have one with 27-8667 on the side ; plus 35 0779 on the bottom, but the adjuster is inboard.
Will all the guts fit in either case?
