  • Valvoline VR1 racing motor oil

Stopped in at my local O'Reilly auto parts today and noticed the Valvoline VR1 racing 50wt oil was on sale for 4.99$ a quart. I know a lot of guys that use this oil in their bikes and this is the lowest price I have seen. Figured I would share.

I just happened to buy some this week also. It is getting hard to find 50wt oil. I went to three auto parts stores before I went to O'Reilly. I also picked up some straight Valvoline 30wt, getting hard to find that also.

Our local farm supply store has w40 and w50 on hand in 5 gallon jugs. It's not racing oil but name brand and better than nothing.

        Howdy chaps,

The benefit of running the racing oil is though it may not have ideal ZDDP levels for flat tappet motors it does have shear additives that somewhat mimick that as this oil was designed for off-road use, and therefore maintaining catalytic converter integrity not an issue. Especially with flathead motors that prodominantly lube themselves with aerated oil mist got away from heavy single weights decades ago. Over the years from Kendall to Shell Rotela and now VR 1, it's been 20 - 50.

Too bad you missed the sale at Auto Zone a few years ago. The racing oil was $1.99 per quart. I spent a few bucks driving to all the AZ's around here buying all they had at each one. Wife always questions me why I do things like that. Got enough to last several more years.

I'm using 50wt Shell Aviation ashless dispersant, readily available. I've bee told ashless dispersant is best for these old engines. I forget what i paid for the case, seems it was around $4/quart.

What I'm reading, a new rebuilt engine should be broken in with plain mineral oil. After the breakin, then go to ashless dispersant which apparently traps debris in the oil.....
