  • 38 Indian Chief

I've been hauling the frame, front end & wheels for a 38 Chief for the better part of 35 years. I guess it's time to fish or cut bait with it.

Remove the rubber bumper from the front fender and found some original paint.

I also found that I had a pair of correct cylinders, they're in rough shape but they can be saved. More on that later.

      I also have a 38 chief project,but I am no expert.
I believe your cylinders are 35-37.I believe the lowest exhaust port fin is one fin with the cylinder on 38-39 chiefs.

You sir are correct. The rest of the engine is a 37 too. It's what I got on the shelf. The purist can cannibalize it after I'm gone.

The bore for the kicker shaft was egged out so I cleaned it up and installed an oversize shaft in it.

Things are progress nicely, I've got a rolling chassis at this point. A big thanks to Greer Engineering for powder coating and lacing the wheels.

Rut Roh, I've got a little fitment issue.

The left tank is pinching the speedo cable against the frame.

The lower right mounting hole does not line up.

The speedo cable issue was easy enough to deal with. I just took a ballpean hammer and pounded a little more relief on the inside of the tank.

The mounting hole took a little more work. After talking it up with people who have been doing this a lot longer than I have. It was agreed that cutting the tab off and relocating it was the best solution.

                          Aaah, perfect fit.

Fill in a little of the welding undercut and I'm all set.

Fantastic pictures, Bill. I love seeing set-up, and machining pics. Obviously, you have everything you need to fix any problems that come up Thanks for posting the pictures.
