  • 26 Transmission Leak

I have a oil leak in my 26 transmission. I have determined the leak is coming from a small hole in the case near the adjuster bolt. I only get oil leaking from here while the bike is running. My question is, is this hole some type of tell tail or what is the purpose of the hole? It looks to be factory to me but I could be wrong.

I have attached a picture. The hole I am referring to is at the end of the pink line, near the adjusting bolt.

Mike that's a weep hole from the kicker side of the case.

Mike, There shouldn't be oil in that part of the gearbox and generally the only way it gets in there is if the seal is leaking around the mainshaft bearing.
The original copper plate seal needs to be in exceptional condition to stop oil getting out of the gearbox and the factory put that hole in the outer case to drain away any oil that gets in there.
As the hole is very small it is usually blocked up and the first indication of oil in the outer case is when it starts leaking past the kickstarter shaft or the clutch operating mechanism.
A lot of owners don't even realise that hole is there.

i updated my 27 trans with sealed bearings on both ends of the main shaft and filled the kicker side with grease. the only "leak" i have is between the bushed main shaft and the main drive gear which is a couple drops parked after running.

Steve, do you have a bearing number for the left side of the mainshaft? Did you have to modify something?

It's been a couple years now since i restored the transmission, i don't recall any modifications, the bearings were a direct fit. I'm looking at the bearing boxes right now, both are FAG, 6208.2RSR.C3, 6304.2RSR.C3.
