It is a carbide generator to run the acetylene lamps.

sorry chris but once again you are incorrect

it is a prestolite tank not a carbide generator. a generator is smaller and opens up to insert carbide and water to generate acetylene. water dropping on the carbide creates the acetylene

this tank is sealed and you just fill with acetylene ( prestolite ). ( similar to oxy/acetylene torches )
