  • '59 kicker question

I just got a 59 Pan in fairly good shape, and I have noticed that when kicking it it seems to be either slipping or just not engaging the motor half of the time. The bushings are a little floppy but what might be causing it? The clutch or gear teeth? Is it an easy fix? Any advice would help..thanks!

Hey Joel, Just rebuilt the kicker on my 56-Pan and I believe they where all the same between 1938 thru 1968. First thing you need to find out is weather it's your clutches slipping or the rachet gear of the kicker not engaging. If you don't notice the clutch slipping when riding then it would be the rachet gear of the kicker. No big deal. It can easily be replaced in a hour or so. The only special tool you'll need is a 2 finger gear puller to remove it from the tranny shaft. If you do it while the bike is on its kickstand there won't be much oil on your floor either. Rebuild kits are avalible everywhere for about $100.00 Hope this helps you out a bit.
