  • interesting 27JD part, at least to me.......

    i recently purchased this clutch release lever complete with the gear shifting lock. it is very interesting to me because of the cover on the lock.

    referring to the 27-31 parts book, page 38, the lock is pn 2239-27 and the description in the parts book on page 39 is "gear shifting lock cpt." the picture in the book shows what appears to be a top view of the lock with it's two bolts/nuts and the cover. the lock in the bolts area is black but the part of the lock that engages with pn 2241-15 "gear lock plate shaft" is not black, but a white sort of color. i am guessing this light colored area seen in parts book is in actuality the cover seen in the attached pictures. and i am going to guess the cover is cadmium plated. the quality of the stamping is not amateur, the stamping has the factory look to me.

    since i've not ever seen an original 27 in the flesh and am unfamiliar with the nuances of these machines, i find the cover on the shifting lock very interesting. i am certain the old hands have seen this cover before, but thought i'd share my excited wonderment.

    Nice piece. For 1928-30 they simplified it by putting a lug on the forging and a pin, nut and lock washer for the interlock, then for 1931-36 reduced the parts count again by just putting a pin into the forged lug at the side of the lever.

      The cover is in fact factory and probably acted as a guard to keep the 1927 only shift lock plunger clean.
      A hole in the top of the transmission can't be a good idea.
      I have a few of those 1927 clamp on lock out assemblies and the covers are all plated.
      I'd have to look again but it seemed that they were more gray in color than Cadmium. I suspect that it may be Tin plated.
      That whole assembly was a real tack-on fix and Steve (Slocombe) is correct in that the 1928 and later design was FAR superior.

        If I'm not mistaken wouldn't this be correct for 26-27? My parts book 22-28 list 2239-27 for 1926 & 1927 twins.

          Thanks, the peril we have of sometimes bidding against each other. i was bidding for the cover. i don't need the arm or the lock, if you need those parts. the arm, lock, nuts, bolts and washers are in excellent condition.

            It would be CORRECT for 1927. 1926 had no lockout provision but the 1927 lockout parts could be retrofit onto a 1926.

              Somewhere I have a Dealers Bulletin that advises the fitment of these to all early 1926 models. Dated around April, May 1926 if I remember correctly.
              My 1926 has the bolt on lock fitted and I have one other complete 1926 gearbox that has that type of lock.
              All the old Harley guys here in NZ swore that these mods came out mid the 1926 model year and that by 1927 the gate type lock was back.
              Both my 1927 J's have the gate type lock.
              And by the way I have never seen one of those tin covers
