    Will a v l transmission fit in a j ?

The adjuster screw is farther out on a VL.

I've seen the opposite way, with late JD gearboxes put in VLs. As Mark says, the adjuster bolts are in different positions, so you can weld the case or remove the adjuster and rely on the bottom mounting bolts and chains to hold the box. I guess we're talking late JD here, I can't say if the VL box will fit easily before 1925.

On pre 1925, none of the chain sprockets line up.

I have a JD transmission in my 1936 VLH and the only problem was the adjuster doesn't line up as mentioned earlier. Also, YES I know the bolt is missing. ;^)

Dear Jim, if you can find a VL gearbox case with a busted ear, then you can cut off the remains of the ear, transfer the internals between the boxes, and be able to sleep at night again...

Why not just get a 1926-29 JD transmission case?
