  • Repainting Question

I'm going to repaint my 1971 FLH. That year the decals were added after the paint was down. The problem is as you ride your leg/knee would rub off the decal. I would like to put a clear coat over the decal to prevent this issue from happening again. My questions...Are there any problems in doing it the way I suggested? If I were to have the bike jugded someday (probably won't) how would the judges treat my change from original?

Don't worry about it. I top coat all my bikes in DuPont Imron. It's good sh$t! Bob L

I know that on the early bikes, the MoCo took a brush and just covered the water decals with clear varnish.

Chris is exactly right here. For reference purposes I attach a couple close up pics of my original paint 36 and you can clearly see the varnish all over the tank and fender. The brighter spots of blue in the pictures you see is where there is no longer any varnish remaining (thus you are seeing "bare" paint). Anthony.
