  • Tach cable 1966 sportster

I bought a Tach cable made by v-twin for my 1966 Sportster it won't fit into the magneto gear, I see v-twin also sells the gear, I don't know if I also have to buy their gear, they say the cable is for my year Sportster, has anyone else had this problem or can someone tell me where I can get a cable that will work , old cable works just has the casing shredded.

Dave, do yourself a big favor and do not run that contraption. The factory gear was good enough at eating up mags. I can only imagine what Satin Tedd’s stuff will do. Unfortunately there is only one manufacture of that cable and your holding in your hand. Watch E-Bay religesly by typing in the part number two times a day. Just run the outer casing for show. I just sold a OEM NOS one on Fleese-Bay a few months ago. I put it up on a buy it now for $150.00. It was sold in five minutes. Bob L

Note that a 1966 will use the cable and housing with a -65A part number.

        66 XLCH Tach Cable

The 65 and 66 were unique in that they were the same length but the 65 was bare metal (like the early speedo cables) and 66 tach and speedo were vinyl covered. A seller on ebay named Barn Fresh had a bunch of the NOS 66A (correct for 66) tach cables at Wauseon a few years back and I bought several, and I believe may have more. The v-twin gear sucks (as does most items from them) and will need to be ground down at the end as it will not engage the rotor drive without modification. They failed to properly grind the end of the gear. Use a synthetic grease on the gaer. I just went through the drive gear BS with a 68 that I did and showed at Dixon. I also did the Hi Fi Blue 66 that is in George Barbers museum and in several books, let me know if you need help.

I used a v twin cable on a 69 resto rider I did and it works without issues. But the plastic end they use to go into the tach is a joke. Can't say how long it will last. As far as the mag end ya gotta keep the gear greased on a regular basis in hopes it dosen't chew the mag rotor up. An original shows up from time to time on ebay. Keep watching.
