  • Shovel head cam.

Hi. I am looking for information on Alternator Shovelhead cams.
Harley used paint codes to help identify the different cams and gear pitches, used through the years .
I am looking to help a freind to identify a Shovelhead altenator H "FLH" cam with Yellow paint code. The gear has a groove machined into the outer face of the gear.
Need the year range of this cam.

    Shovel head cam

Steve, I have always been under the impression that the paint spots were a code system to match the pinion gear with the cam gear. Not sure if they were fit for lash then painted or if they were pre painted and then assembled together? I can't help on the fitment of your cam example but I believe all the OEM alternator shovel cams have the referenced groove machined into them.

        Hi MB and Perry.
        Thanks for your input.
Just before I looked at the forum to see if anyone had answered, I rang a mate over here and he told me the same type of info.
        Green...small,
        White... intermediate
        Red...large diam gear
But your list "Perry" shows a few more options to get the lash right.
        Regards Steve
