  • "Made in England" decal script

A word about the gold "Made in England" written script decal as seen on BSAs and 1971 and later Triumphs:
This decal was only on the front down tube or steering head of BSA frames before 1971. Its use on Triumph frames begins with the 1971 models. This is because of the use of the new oil-in-frame frames, which were made for both BSA and Triumph in the same factory (probably the BSA works.)
The need for "uniformity of appaerance" is probably the reason these decals were also applied to Triumph 500cc frames (non oil-in-frame frames) also beginning with the 1971 models.
I have seen these decals wrongly used on 1970 and earlier Triumphs, sometimes on bikes restored by so-called "professionals" who, if they had been truly professional in their research, would never had made this mistake.
If restoring a pre-1971 Triumph 500 or 650, do not make this mistake as it should result in a one-point deduction (if the judge knows what he is doing.)
Also, 1970 was the LAST year that the "World Speed record Holder" decal was used on all Triumphs. Again, if this decal appears on a 1971 or later Triumph, it should also be a one-point deduction.

    Hi Britluv

Where should the "speed record" decal be placed on a 1970 TR6R? This pic shows it on the left fork (head light mount). I have also seen it on the top left of the gas tank, but I think this is a 1967 TR6C.

      Decal

According to David Gaylin that Decal goes on the Left Headlight Support Bracket.

The WORLD SPEED RECORD decal should be placed just above the botton of the tubular part of the headlight mount, facing you as you view the bike from the left side.
The top of the gas tank should have a smaller version of the "TIGER 650" decal where you now have the "Speed record" decal.
The "Speed Record" decal was moved to the headlight mount beginning with 1968 models, when Triumph decided to put the model name decal on top of the tank. Beginning with the 1971 models, the Speed Record decal was eliminated, being out of date after fifteen years of use!
Also beginning in 1968, the small "MADE IN ENGLAND" (block letters) decal, which used to accompany the Speed Record decal on top of the tank, was moved to the top of the oil tank to join the "oil information" decal. You can hardly see it unless you raise the seat.
