  • Who's restoring a 36 Knucklehead?

It is amazing how hard it is to make any progress on your project if you are a newbie. From a guy that has been rebuilding old Mustangs and Chevys as well as Austin Healys and even old Hoosier cabinets for the last 20 years, rebuilding my Harley has been the hardest thing I've done so far. It's not the work. Actually my old Harley is about as complicated and labor intensive as the Hoosier Cabinet I'm redoing, but parts for everything else I've worked on has been a LOT easier to come by. I know that over the last few years it has gotten easier with the internet and ebay but it is still pretty difficult to find the right part at the right time. With that in mind, as I continue to search for my own parts, if I come across interesting finds, I will try to post them here.

For anyone restoring a 36 knucklehead, there is an interesting one on Craigslist Canada right now. Not sure if price is U.S. or Canadian.

VERY RARE 1936 KNUCKLEHEAD RIGHT SIDE ENGINE CASE, NEVER BROKEN OR REPAIRED IN ANY WAY. TOTALLY ORIGINAL, STRAIGHT AND READY TO USE. MAY CONSIDER TRADES OF OTHER KNUCKLE ITEMS.
    * Location: COURTENAY (British Columbia maybe?)

Pictures of the case in the ad attached to the bottom of this message

By the Way, if anyone knows where I might find a 1939 Big Twin Frame, a late 1941-1947 knucklehead oil pump cover or a 1946 knucklehead right hand case, let me know.

    Thanks,
    Jim

The engine cases are probably the easiest part to find for a '36 EL. Everything else is impossible/exorbitant.

You've got narrow your oil pump years down a little. There are at least 4 separate and distinct different bodies between 1941 and 1948. I can probably help you out with most of them. Jerry

WOOPS, I meant I am looking for a 1946 right hand case. I edited it into the original post. While looking for the 46, I ran across the advertisement for the 36 (which I posted).

Chris, Thanks for all your help. You are always a source of knowledge on these forums. Your email last night on where to find parts was enlightening.

Jerry, #1, I should have been more specific. I am looking for an oil pump cover. #2, I need to do my homework and get back to you. I am fairly certain that it is part #68-41, the non rear chain oiling cover but I'll go take another look. Mine is damaged (almost beyond repair).

Carl, You and Matt do make some great parts. I remember how perfect the intake manifolds and the front crash bars looked when My Dad and I visited with you last fall.

          Thanks,
          Jim
