Early cylinder colors

I would like to get some opinions on the plating/painting of early HD cylinders (and cases if we want to go that far). I'm interested in up to 1929. Was nickel plating standard, for what years? Did they mix painted cylinders on some models? Did they use black engine enamel (as in later years), flat, gloss? Ever use other color paints? Thanks
