  • 57 Sportster Voltage Regulator Mounting?

Hi everyone, I am looking for a way to mount my voltage regulator to my 57 sportster generator. The generator I have is the early type it actually has a stamped label on it that says Model 52K which I know does not belong on my 57 Sportster, however research has shown me that this style generator is the same one that was used on Sportsters in 1957 minus the incorrect label. Now my father has a 61 Sportster and his voltage regulator which is the same as mine mounts with a bracket that they came with but his generator does not have the same end cover and it is larger then mine. I know his to be original because he has owned the motorcycle for 40 years. I know the mounting and configurations changed from 57 to 61 and I know that they beefed up the generator in that time span also so the generator although both 6 volt generators are not identical. My parts cataglog shows me the "KIT" I need to mount it but I have not been able to locate this anywhere. The part number I have is 74521-48, "Mounting Bracket Kit" used on 54-64 KH, XL, and XLH. as opposed to the "Mounting Bracket" used on my fathers 61 Sportster which is 74524-58 used on 58- XLH and 59-64 XLH, and XLCH.

Any Info would be great in locating a kit or an alternate method on mounting this. Thanks

I had to pick up a Accel reg it has the mount on then and used my old cover, or if you want to use your reg with the bad mounts you can all ways use the mounts off the accel

Thanks for the input guys, The NOSPARTS.NL website seems to have the "KIT" I need to mount the regulator however it says that they do not ship to the U.S.A. so that does not do me much good. I am interested more in what you were saying Jeff, I also bought myself an Accel Regulator, did not see any mounts in the box with it, how did you mount your regulator ? If you have close up pictures that would be great, Thanks.

Thanks Chris, no such luck with the U.S. site, I actually had checked there in the past and I got nothing then. I don't think its going to be easy to find this kit, I doubt they make them anymore and if there are any left around I am sure there are not many. I think I have to start thinking of an alternative way to mount this, Maybe double stick tape? haha if all else fails.

They are both the same company. If one has it so does the other. It just may not be on the web page. He can ship it to you from "Over There" but it is cheaper to buy it here.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the help. I will send that guy an e-mail to see if he has the part available in the U.S.A. I appreciate the picture Jeff, any close ups would be great. I am expecting my engine back from rebuild in a matter of weeks so assembly will start shortly, time to get everything in order.

Thanks Jeff, those pics definitely helped. I see your generator says "Model 52K" on it I have seen a lot of these, have seen none with "57 XL" stamped. Mine says "Model 52K" as well. Like you I got the Accell regulator so mine is ready to mount, thanks for the help.

The model 52 was used from 1952 untill the model 58 came out in 1958.

Well that makes a lot of sense....I was wondering why they would stamp the model motorcycle on the generator? Ok so mine that says "Model 52K" is actually correct for my 57 Sportster. Thats good to hear. Thanks Chris.
