  • front wheel speedometer drive to a star hub

My new Knuck bobber will have a new five speed tranny in it. Has anybody had any experience adapting a modern front wheel speedometer drive to a star hub?

No ideas? How about using the 1935 style 45" speedometer drive? Anybody have one?

Chris, Given the value of your responses to everyone else's questions, I'm sorry I can help with your question.

HOWEVER, I did want to thank you for the pics you have posted in your "Signature Links". I really like the "Smoke 'em" and the "Babe on Harley". Do you collect pics, or are these all yours? I have a few digital pics that you may be interested in. My uncle was a Harley flat track racer, sales manager, service manager and later, a referee at all the big events. He's in the AMA Hall of Fame (Freddie Ephrem). Anyway, I have several pics of him in the shop crammed full of mid-to late-40's Harleys and his buddies, also in front of the dealership wth some of the same suspects. I also have a few pics of him on bikes ... after a race on a WLDR (late 40's I think), and on a 40 Knuckle with another uncle on the buddy seat. If you're interested, let me know how to send them to you. Vic

I've never done this, but I'd suggest trying a 35-36 style star hub outer cover (the ones with the notches in it for the Corbin drive tangs) and fitting a front wheel drive unit. I have a 67127-84A drive unit here and the tang id bent too high. Might be able to rebend it lower. Looking in the jobber catalogue it looks like 67073-81 is the thinnest of the drive units (assuming space is a problem) ... Perry

I didn't want to use a later model drive on the star hub. But I finally found a way to do it and hide it. After the drive is installed I will drill a hole in a 11260-46 hub cap. The speedometer cable will exit through this hole and the modern drive will be hidden under a period accessory.

Nice solution to hide the drive. Since you mention a -46 part number I assume you're running a springer? I ask since the later (55 and up I think) glide hubcaps already had a hole in them for access to the grease nipple on the outer cover. Might save you needing to drill one ... Perry
