Does anyone know about the ratchet drive on the hi-output generators. What was Harley's reason for?

I'm gonna be honest and tell you, I dont know why the ratchet feature. BUT, I can tell you of one advantage of it. If the regulator points stuck the generator would motor over making a noticeable ratcheting sound. (Overruning condition"). With the genearator able to rotate, the windings would not get overheated from a "stalled" condition as you have with the standard direct gear drive.. Also, with the noise you would hear, you would probably want to pick up a rock er sumpin and tap the daylights out of the regulater to get home. My thoughts.
